Philip A. Loring Phil is an anthropologist at UAF. He teaches a senior seminar, ‘Sustainability in Small-Scale Societies,’ and serves as co-editor of the Anthropological Papers of the University of Alaska, New Series. His interests are ethnobotany, nutritional anthropology, intellectual property and technological literacy, with a focus on indigenous food systems, natural systems farming, tribalism, and the vulnerabilities imbedded in the global, agro-industrial food system. He is the editor of The Fireweed, an online journal, and writes a column for the Republic called Outpost Agriculture, which focuses on all things food: the science, culture, and politics of its production and consumption.
