Submissions to the paper

Submissions are due on the first of the month.
The editor prefers e-mail, and can be reached at 479-3368, or P.O. Box 24, Ester, AK 99725. Contributors receive what fame or notoriety the paper can provide. All features and columns are the responsibilty of their respective authors; all misstatements and opinions expressed therein are also their fault. Contributors hold the copyright to their work. All items on this webpage by irregulars for the Republic have been posted with their permission.

For more detailed information on article requirements, see below and also our writer's guidelines.

Letters to the Editor

Please do write. Points will be given for well-written prose displaying good taste, irreverent and witty humor, things said that need to be said, and good, useful, constructive criticism. Mere ranting or whining won't see the light of day. Call us on the carpet if we need it. Please limit your letters to approximately 350 words and civil language. Small children may be reading this paper, so please avoid words you don't want them repeating. Include your name, address, and telephone number or e-mail. (We only publish your name and the city, state, and country.) Anonymous submissions will not be published, but names may be withheld by request. The Republic reserves the right to edit or reject letters. Letters published will be posted to the website. Please endeavor to submit your letters no later than the 10th of the month, and preferably by the first.

Articles and Columns

We can't pay you (we run on a shoestring), but we encourage the submission of articles and regular columns. We do accept the occasional guest article or column (i.e., one written by someone outside the Greater Ester Area or beyond the Ester mindset). Articles should be from around 300 to 3000 words (one full page is 850 words or so). Topics cover a wide range: political commentary; recipes and restaurant reviews; movie, book, theatre, and music reviews; travelogues; poetry; fiction; local history; satire; anecdotes; and reporting and muckraking. For more complete writer's guidelines, please contact the editor or go to our full guidelines. Contributors receive two complimentary copies of the issue in which their work appears. Acceptance and publication of all articles are subject to the whim of the publisher, for which she makes no apologies.

Calendar of Events

An important consideration in submitting items to the Calendar of Events is that the Republic is a monthly, and a somewhat irregular one at that. The calendar extends for two to three months ahead of the month of publication, and covers a full year in the January issue. The paper comes out as early as the 15th and as late (gack) as the 29th of the month, but usually is out on newsstands and mailboxes by the 21st. Ish.

Births, Deaths, and Marriages

The Stork Report, usually written by the editor, appears as necessary, when the parents provide the essential information. Photographs of the new baby are encouraged.

Obituaries are accepted for cats, dogs, and people in or associated with the community. Anecdotes and photographs are encouraged, as it is the value of their lives rather than the details of their deaths that make the dead important to us--although how a person dies can serve as a warning to those still living.

Engagement and wedding announcements are also welcome. Again, anecdotal articles and informal photographs are preferred. This kind of thing calls for a party, and parties are great for the Society Page news.

Public Announcements

Again, bear in mind that the paper is irregular, so time-sensitive announcements should come with a warning to the editor. Space is limited, so announcements pertinent to the community have preference.

Artwork

Illustrations, prints, cartoons (particularly political or editorial cartoons), and so forth are all encouraged. IF YOU SUBMIT AN ORIGINAL, we cannot be held responsible for what the post office does to it either on the way to us or on the way back to you. Submission of originals is at your own risk. Scans sent via e-mail are welcome, but bear in mind our print needs: bitmap or lineart scans should be done at 100% size and 600 dpi at a minimum, and grayscale (for images with shading) should be scanned at 100% and 300 dpi minimum. The paper is printed on a Xerox DocuTech at 600 dpi, 106 lpi. If this doesn't make sense to you, please send us a hard copy so we can scan it here.

Cartoons

The paper publishes editorial cartoons and encourages submissions. The Republic's staff cartoonists, Dan Darrow and Jamie Smith, tend toward political commentary, but this is not a requirement for publication. Please see the guidelines for artwork, above. Please also see our publication schedule, particularly if your cartoon is of a time-sensitve nature.

Photography

Photos are always needed. As above, submission of originals is at your own risk and subject to the vagaries of the post office. We don't have a slide scanner, so send either prints or scans you've made and put on zip disk or on a CD. We use Macs, so make sure it's compatible with Mac format (OS 10.3) and Photoshop CS2 or Acrobat 7.

Subject matter is up to you, preferably seasonal, preferably visually arresting. All photos are printed in black and white, so bear that in mind. The humorous, elegant, and dramatic are more likely to be published.
